SLAMJUNK Presents: Jake Sherman | Kami Maltz | Rosemary Minkler

Wednesday February 5th

Born in Boston, JAKE SHERMAN learned classical piano by listening to his father play Bach every morning. If not for an intervention - stumbling upon the catalog of Weird Al Yankovic at 11 years old - he would have followed in his father’s path or perhaps become a jazz purist. But Weird Al changed everything. Jake started a parody band and sang his newly-written lyrics to classics like “All Star” by Smashmouth and “Men in Black” by Will Smith, along with composing new family classics such as “Amy, You’re Turning 49” and “Charles, Charles Sherman.” Fast forward some years beyond his time studying at Berklee College of Music and it’s clear Jake has found a way to combine his appreciation of great songwriting with his piano/organ-playing prowess. He has become a go-to musician on recordings, and tours for artists including Meshell Ndegeocello, Bilal, Andrew Bird and Nick Hakim. Chance the Rapper’s Grammy-winning song “No Problem” includes some of Jake’s work. More recently, Jake has re-tapped his well of musicality and songmaking to create his upcoming album, Jake Sherman Gets Sexy. Due out in March 2020, the album is a journey through modern dating and relationships, with a point of view that is somehow both poignant and Weird Al-esque. Brooklyn based Kami Maltz brings the resonance of her native Israel, the passion of her second home, Argentina, and a decidedly New York electronic vibe to her performance. With a smooth voice and her autoharp, Kami conjures a sensuous combination of folk and indie elements, with an added touch of cotton-candy, pop embellishments. "Kami Maltz has wowed listeners with her smooth voice, her blending of folk and electronic elements, and her ability to craft songs about complex emotions through catchy hooks and poetic lyrics. Her new single "Kingdom" has all of that" - The Deli "Kami Maltz captures the same brooding energy as Chvrches on her new single" - Mystic Sons "Imagine Joanna Newsom's voice on top of the swirling instrumentals of a Lorde song. That sums up Kami Maltz's music in a nutshell. The Brooklyn singer/songwriter released a new single chock full of that hypnotizing sound... it sports masterful production bringing out the humming basses and ethereal synths" - The Deli "On The Loose by Brooklyn-based Kami Maltz takes a ‘less is more’ approach to its organic-sounding arrangement, allowing the listener to create their own shadows and light by exploring the uncertain imagery in the lyrics and understated musical tones" - Electronic North "Kami combines the familiarity of folk music with a twist curated by electronic elements. Channeling Haim meets Lorde “On the loose” is an expressive mood altering tune" - Northern Transmissions Born and raised in Waterbury, CT, Rosemary Minkler is an accomplished pianist, composer, and audio engineer. She grew up surrounded by music and began studying piano at an early age, discovering her passion for jazz at the Litchfield Jazz Camp. She continued her studies on a full scholarship to Western Connecticut State University, where she received a degree in Audio and Music Production with a concentration in Jazz Piano. Here, she worked closely with renowned jazz saxophonist Jimmy Greene and was an intern for Stamford-based audio engineer Greg Tobler, whom she still works with. Rosemary's diverse abilities make her an in-demand musician and audio engineer. She currently lives in Brooklyn, New York, working as an audio engineer for Buzzfeed News's live news show "AM to DM", regularly performing her original music, and often working with other musicians. Rosemary has a jazz piano trio album and several singles available for purchase and streaming on platforms such as iTunes, Apple Music, Spotify, and Tidal. She works with Korg Keyboards as a digital pianos and synth specialist as well as Antares Audio Technologies (AutoTune). SLAMJUNK Presents: Holy Hand Grenade (Afrobeat/Funk) event photo

SLAMJUNK Presents: Holy Hand Grenade (Afrobeat/Funk)

Wednesday March 18th

Holy Hand Grenade took on its name in a moment of spontaneity. The band, like it’s name, is a spontaneous, fun and mischievous convergence of Afrobeat, Funk, and Jazz. The band’s seven members, Lynn Ligammari, Lathan Hardy, Dave Palazola, Timothy James, Chris Doyle, Ronnie Lanzilotta and Marcus Farrar, all hail from various parts of the Eastern United States, but draw on sounds spanning generations, continents and genres, with influences ranging from Mulatu Astake and Fela Kuti, to Eddie Harris and El Michels Affair. Members of the band split their time recording and touring with acts like Antibalas, Conor Oberst, Red Baraat, Durand Jones & The Indications, Evolfo, Pronoun, Rodes Rollins, Armo, Touki Delphine, and The Sway Machinery. The Brooklyn ensemble has been kicking around the city’s groove music scene, playing venues such as Brooklyn Bowl, Nublu, Bembe, Queen’s Brewery, Apotheke, and more. Saxophonist Lynn Ligammari and guitarist Timothy James have been collaborating for years, going back to their days playing with the band Thought in Buffalo. Drummer Dave Palazola and saxophonist Lathan Hardy crossed paths while rehearsing for a West African Balafon group, just before Dave made his move from Maine to New York. The two kept in touch, and after Lathan and Lynn met, the three began playing together regularly, forming the kernel of Holy Hand Grenade. Not long after, keyboardist Chris Doyle and bassist Ronnie Lanzilotta entered the mix. More recently, guitarist Timothy James and percussionist Marcus Farrar of Antibalas have joined the group, becoming fixtures of the band’s luscious rhythmic and groove-based landscape. All having joined up in time for Holy Hand Grenade to record their first full length LP, Celebrate not Separate. In 2018, Mike Allen of Tigershrimp records added Holy Hand Grenade to the label’s burgeoning roster of artists. https://www.hhgnyc.com BUY TICKETS: https://holyhandgrenade.brownpapertickets.com
