Banda de los Muertos comes from Brooklyn, but their roots are far deeper. The group is an intriguing mix of musicians playing in the Sinaolese Banda style, which merged nimble Mexican folks tunes with the loping stomp of German polkas, thanks to German immigration to Mexico in the 1800s. Some of Muertos’ players are veterans of traditional Mexican styles, while others are straight out of the New York jazz scene. Founders Oscar Noriega, reeds, and Jacob Garchik, trombone, call the tunes, in a sense, staying loyal to their Banda ancestry but allowing the multifaceted influences of their large band come to a steaming, rolling boil that reminds listeners that “American music” is an adjective that can be widely applied to all the music of the Americas—in this case, working together in the service of expanding the tradition.
